So Bank Holiday Hillmans in the 70s.

My grandad had a Hillman Minx. Nicknamed The Tank. Every weekday morning at 5 he drove from Custom House to Billingsgate to pick up stock for the chippy. No matter what it just ploughed on. If anyone else's car broke down, The Tank would rescue you. One winter (81?) was so cold the diesel in my Dad's taxi froze. Out came The Tank. By then it was held together with plate steel welded straight on top of the chassis and bodywork.

It stank of decades of being used as a fish n chip shop's van of course, but that was part of its charm. Eventually it failed its MOT and a Honda Civic was bought to replace it. Always thought that a bit of my grandad died that day. Shame it didn't last a couple more years so I could have driven it, lap belts, horizontal speedo and all...

District to barking, rattler to Southend central. Peter pan's playground, being fucked off every year being too young to go on the go carts.

Fights between mods and rockers. My nan never ever learning that it happened every year. Never again she'd say, but we still went. Walk the pier, Pepsi and tavern snacks in the jolly fisherman. Train back dow the pier.

Can't really remember as back then they generally fell in school holidays.

Used to get quite excited when the fair was on at Hampton Court though.

Then I had kids myself and realised just how expensive it was...
